Tips for Minimizing Home Maintenance Costs

August 30, 2023 by First Residential Mortgage

Buy a Home in Blacksburg VA

In a recent post about tips for new homeowners, we mentioned that you will need to get used to maintaining your home. Part of that entails keeping those maintenance costs down as low as you can.

For every square foot, you will need to have around $1 to put into maintaining your home each year. So, if your home is 1,800 square feet, you should expect to need around $1,800 to spend. Here are some tips that can help you keep your costs down:

How To Cut The Costs Of Home Maintenance

  • Buy a home in good condition: A great starting place is to make sure the home you are purchasing is not likely to need a ton of maintenance and repairs. Buying a home that is already in great shape can save you a lot of time and money later down the road.
  • Learn to DIY: The more home maintenance you can perform on your own, the less expensive it will be to take care of your home’s upkeep.
  • Get rid of unnecessary features: If there are features on your house that are expensive to maintain but serve no purpose for you, you might want to just remove them, especially if you plan to stay in the home for a very long time.
  • Do preventative maintenance: As the old saying goes, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” That is certainly true when it comes to home maintenance. Spending a little on routine maintenance can help prevent the need to spend a lot on repairs.
  • Conduct routine inspections and act fast: It is easy for developing problems to escape our notice, especially in a large home. Deliberately inspect every corner of your home on a regular basis. If you catch small problems that are growing, fix them before they become much worse.
